About Hyvemind
Hyvemind investigates the systems and decisions that determine how we live and gives working-class people the knowledge and tools to make life better, together, in their own communities.
We report on the systems shaping everyday life, explain how they work and connect readers with resources, organizations and practical ways to participate in changing them.
Human beings need more than the means to survive. We need clean air and water, nourishing food, shelter and rest. We need relationships, belonging, beauty, meaningful work and places to gather. We depend on one another and on the living systems around us.
The systems we live and work under shape our days, where we live, how we work, what we eat, the technologies we use and the environments we inhabit. These arrangements are often treated as inevitable, even when they are the result of decisions about what we value, who holds power and how the resources of our shared world are distributed.
Understanding how those decisions are made, who benefits from them and where people have the power to intervene is the first step toward changing the conditions of everyday life. That is the work Hyvemind exists to make visible, understandable and actionable.
“The ultimate, hidden truth of the world is that it is something that we make, and could just as easily make differently.”
David Graeber
We seek to expand what working-class people understand about the challenges shaping their lives and what is possible beyond them. Our mission is to build a culture rooted in human dignity, ecological stewardship and care for the people and places that sustain us.
Our vision is a collective future shaped by three connected areas: systems, ecology and culture. We explore the systems that can support human-centered institutions and policies, the ecological understanding needed to live within the limits of the natural world and the cultural conditions that can strengthen social connection, safety, growth and purpose.
How we work
We help people move from awareness to understanding, and from understanding to active participation in shaping the places they live.
Our work examines the forces shaping everyday life, explains how power and systems operate and connects readers with the people, ideas, organizations and resources already working toward change.
The goal is to give people greater knowledge of the forces affecting their lives, greater connection to the living world and greater capacity to participate in shaping their communities and collective futures.
Our work combines
Public-interest journalism
Reporting that follows power, policy, institutions and the systems shaping everyday life.
Ecological understanding
Reporting grounded in the relationship between human wellbeing and the living world.
Cultural storytelling
Stories about the ideas, relationships and cultural forces that shape how people understand themselves and one another.
Resources for action
Practical pathways that help readers learn more, find organizations, share information and participate in their communities.
